Impact is built into the island experience.

Our Impact

At Kisoro Art Island, we see hospitality as more than accommodation. Our work is rooted in creative exchange, local collaboration, environmental awareness, and long-term investment in the community around us. From arts education and artist residencies to local employment and food grown on site, we aim to create a model where tourism, culture, and community can grow together.

Arts Education for Local Youth

We provide an art program for primary school children in the Mutanda Island community, teaching drawing, painting, clay modeling, collage, storytelling, and craft-making using local and recycled materials. These classes offer local children an opportunity to build confidence, explore ideas, and express themselves in new ways.

We believe access to creative education matters. These environments nurture curiosity, deepen engagement, and allow young people to connect with their creativity, their culture, and the world around them. By supporting art opportunities for local youth, we hope to help nurture future creators and visionaries within the community.

  • Art is central to the identity of Kisoro Art Island. We welcome both local and international artists to the island to create works that respond to the landscape, materials, and culture of the region. Many of these pieces are made using natural materials found on or near the island, allowing the work to feel deeply connected to its environment.

These collaborations create opportunities for exchange, learning, and visibility while shaping a destination that is both culturally rich and environmentally grounded. The result is a living landscape of art that grows organically over time.

  • Our on-site garden is an important part of how we think about sustainability and hospitality. We grow food on the island that is incorporated into our culinary offerings, helping us create fresh meals while strengthening our connection to the land.

This approach supports a more thoughtful, low-impact model of hosting — one that values seasonality, local growing, and a closer relationship between what is cultivated and what is shared at the table.

  • We are committed to employing members of the local community and investing in their growth through hospitality training and hands-on experience. As Kisoro Art Island grows, we want that growth to translate into meaningful jobs, skill-building, and long-term opportunity.

By training and working alongside local team members, we aim to build a hospitality model that is not only high quality, but locally rooted — one where knowledge, confidence, and economic opportunity can continue to expand over time.

A Long-Term Vision

Our vision for impact is ongoing. We are continually exploring ways to deepen our relationships with local communities, support creative practice, grow responsibly, and build a destination that contributes positively to the region around it. We believe meaningful hospitality can do more than welcome guests. It can help cultivate creativity, empower communities, and create experiences that leave a lasting benefit beyond the stay.

We work with Far Away Project, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, to receive donations in support of select impact initiatives in the Virunga Region.
